Corneal nerve imaging and analysis can be used as biomarkers for systemic disease and aid in the early diagnosis and stratification of diseases and enable assessment of therapeutic responses.
This project aims to build a local normative dataset of corneal nerve parameters to inform reference ranges for clinical diagnostics of neurological diseases including small fibre neuropathy and motor neurone disease.
Currently, direct measures of peripheral nerve anatomy include invasive skin biopsy and nerve histology, a procedure that is not currently available in Western Australia.
The inclusion of corneal confocal microscopy in clinical trials relating to interventions aimed at treating neurological diseases will provide a direct measurement of a patient/participant’s response to therapy.
